Some oral problems are genetic, such as an overbite or a case of dry mouth. For the most part, however, you’re in charge of your teeth. Decay occurs when you don’t take care of them. Maybe you’re eating the wrong foods, or slacking off on your oral care routine. But you can always fix the problem and change up your habits to prevent future damage.

What you eat and drink has a profound effect on your teeth. That’s why it’s critical to start early and teach children about healthy nutrition. After all, kids (and adults!) tend to love all of the beverages and treats that are bad for their teeth. Sugary foods are the worst.

Sugar has a party with oral bacteria, which creates acid that does significant damage to tooth enamel. However, you have to realize that candy isn’t the only sugar-spun culprit. Fruit has sugar, too, and dried fruit has even more. Yogurt, pudding, cake, cookies—all of those sweet treats can lead to decay unless they’re eaten in moderation. Sugary drinks are no better. You know that soda can lead to cavities and decay, but were you aware that some fruit juices can do the same thing?

Go easy on starchy foods, too. Bread, chips, cookies, crackers, and similar foods are high in starch. In your mouth, the starch breaks down into simple sugars. At that point, sugar once again works with bacteria to create acid.

Acidic foods are problematic, as well. Citrus fruits have acid that can eat away at the enamel of the teeth. Even bread and fish contain acid. Soda and fruit juice form a double threat here. Energy drinks are especially dangerous on the acid and sugar front. It’s not necessary to cut out all of these foods, but always eat in moderation, with proper oral hygiene after.

Even a quick rinse is helpful until you can get to your toothbrush. Look for healthy snacking alternatives, as well. Stick with vegetables that can help to clean the teeth as you chew, such as raw broccoli and celery.

Lax Oral Hygiene Habits


Tooth decay doesn’t just happen. If you don’t brush and floss regularly, then your smile will suffer the consequences.

Both adults and children should brush their teeth at least twice a day, and floss once. Younger children have baby teeth that will eventually be replaced, but the point is to instill healthy habits. That involves leading by example. Teach your child how to brush correctly.

You need the right tools for the job. Choose an age-appropriate toothbrush, a healthy toothpaste, and floss. You may also consider a water-pik for deep cleaning. Floss sticks are convenient, too. Find what works for you because as long as it cleans your teeth, it’s a fine choice.

Everyone needs to visit the dentist regularly. Usually, once every six months is sufficient. Some children may need to go more frequently than twice a year, however. Anyone with cavities, a crooked bite, or gum issues will have to go more often.

Most people who grind their teeth don’t even realize it. They wake up with a sore mouth, an aching jaw, or a headache, but they typically attribute the problems to stress, sleeping wrong, or something else. Teeth grinding usually happens while you’re sound asleep, although it can crop up during tense situations, as well.

Grinding causes decay because it erodes the outer layer of the enamel on your teeth. It literally grinds it away, and you probably aren’t even aware of it. Fortunately, your dentist should pick up on the habit, which is relatively easy to fix. All you need is a bite guard, which can work for children as well as adults.

Things That Are Too Abrasive For Your Teeth

How abrasive is your toothpaste?

5 Ways to Get Rid of Coffee Stains on Your Teeth at Home

As any dedicated coffee drinker will know – as well as those who enjoy tea or red wine – our daily brew comes at a price: drinking coffee (or tea or wine) stains teeth. This creates quite a dilemma. We don’t want to give up our favorite beverage but we all want beautiful, white teeth.

If you want to continue drinking coffee but you are looking for a way to maintain your bright and shiny smile, we have a list of methods for whitening teeth at home – as well as some suggestions for avoiding the stains in the first place.

How do teeth stain?

Before we give you our tips, let’s look very briefly at how coffee and other drinks stain teeth.

Our teeth consist of several layers, the outermost of which being the enamel. Enamel is the hardest and most mineralized substance in our body and protects the more delicate layers below.

The enamel on our teeth is covered in microscopic holes. When food or drink becomes stuck in the holes, the enamel becomes stained. This is known as “extrinsic staining”.

However, if we do not regularly clean this extrinsic staining, the tooth below can also become stained; this is known as “intrinsic staining”. Intrinsic staining is much harder to clean, and for this reason, it is very important regularly to remove stains from our teeth.

How can you remove stains from your teeth at home?

Here are our top five tricks for whitening teeth and removing coffee stains at home without the need to see a dentist.

Use a hydrogen peroxide and baking soda mix

This is one of the most popular DIY methods for removing stains. First, you need to prepare a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Take a container to mix it in and start by adding a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Then add some baking soda and stir to make a paste.

Once you have made your mixture, there are two ways to use it. Either you can use the mixture to brush your teeth just like with a toothpaste or you can spread it over your teeth and leave it to act for around 15-20 minutes. After you have finished, brush your teeth with regular toothpaste.

Some people might be alarmed at the idea of putting hydrogen peroxide in their mouth since this is the same chemical we use for bleaching hair – but actually there is nothing to worry about at all since hair bleach is a completely different product.

Use a home teeth-whitening kit

Teeth-whitening kits also commonly use hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. There are at least two kinds.

There is some controversy over these products, however. Most whitening toothpastes contain tiny abrasive particles which polish your teeth by scratching them. Prolonged use may wear the enamel on your teeth. Since enamel doesn’t grow back, this can lead to permanent damage.

Oil Pulling

If you drink through a straw, the coffee will not wash over your teeth and so will not have chance to stain them. This is an effective method of avoiding stains, but some might find it strange with hot coffee.

Rinse your mouth after drinking coffee or brush your teeth

After drinking coffee, simply rinse your mouth with water. This will remove some of the damaging acidity from your teeth.

Dangerous Dentistry: Safe Removal For Mercury Fillings!

In our last article, we addressed the dangers of mercury fillings and the importance of removing them. However, removing mercury fillings should be done only by an experienced dentist, who understands the careful detail it takes to safely remove amalgams. When someone is ready to take the step forward and begin the removal process, here are some steps their dentist should follow:

 

  1. Prior to the procedure, the patient should be given a mixture of charcoal, chlorella, or similar adsorbent to rinse and swallow. An adsorbent is a substance that allows gas, liquid or solids in suspension to attach to its surface without itself undergoing a chemical change.
  2. In order to protect the patient, and themselves, everyone in the procedure room should be wearing protective gowns and covers. The dental staff should be wearing hair/head covers, face covers, non-latex nitrile gloves, and either a positive pressure mask providing air or oxygen, or a respiratory grade mask rated to capture mercury. The patient should be fitted with a properly sealed dental dam made with non-latex nitrile material. The patient should also be wearing a full head/face/neck barrier under and around the dam, and a saliva ejector should be placed under the dental dam to reduce mercury exposure to the patient. In order to protect the patient from inhaling mercury vapors, an external source of air or oxygen should be provided. This can be done via a nasal mask, or a nasal cannula covered with a protective barrier.
  3. The dental office should have a properly installed amalgam separator to collect mercury waste, so that the waste is not released into sewage. In addition, the procedure room should have an adequate filtration system in place capable of removing mercury vapor and amalgam particles.
  4. During procedure, the amalgam should be sectioned into chunks and removed in as large of pieces as possible, using a small diameter carbide drill. The dental staff should make sure to utilize their filtration system no more than four inches from the patient’s mouth in order to prevent mercury exposure.
  5. Dentists must comply with federal, state, and local regulations addressing the proper handling and cleaning/disposal of mercury-contaminated clothing, equipment, and surfaces in the dental office.
  6. After the removal process is completed, the patient’s mouth should be thoroughly flushed with water and then rinsed with the same charcoal, chlorella, or similar adsorbent mixture thoroughly.

Even if a someone has the filling(s) removed, it does not mean that their mercury exposure ends there. It’s essential to undergo chelation therapy in order to ensure that the body is completely rid of the toxic element. Some natural mercury eliminating agents to use are: cilantro, chlorella, fresh garlic, selenium, vitamin c, and hyaluronic acid. Though the process seems challenging, even just starting with one mercury amalgam at a time, and beginning chelation therapy, can significantly improve your health!
