2. Food Grade vs. What's Usually on the Drugstore Shelf

Let's clear up a common point of confusion: all hydrogen peroxide contains stabilizers, including ours. Stabilizers are what keep the formula from breaking down before you get to use it. The real question isn't "does it have stabilizers," it's "what kind, and what are they formulated for."

Essential Oxygen's food grade hydrogen peroxide uses food grade stabilizers, formulated specifically for use around food, on skin, and throughout your home. That's a meaningfully different formulation than a general-purpose bottle made for the first aid aisle, which isn't designed with food contact or produce washing in mind.

3. Why Does It Bubble? (The Science, Made Simple)

You spray it on a strawberry and it starts fizzing like it's auditioning for a science fair. Totally normal, and actually kind of satisfying to watch. Here's what's happening:

Catalase, the tiny cleanup crew. Catalase is an enzyme found in virtually every living thing, plants, produce, soil microbes, even your own cells. When hydrogen peroxide meets catalase, it triggers a rapid reaction that breaks the H₂O₂ into water and oxygen gas. The more biological material present (and the fresher it is), the more dramatic the bubbles.

Oxidation, the actual workhorse. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent, which means it chemically breaks apart organic compounds sitting on a surface. Residue, film, and organic debris all get worked on to varying degrees.

Put plainly: when hydrogen peroxide contacts organic material, it breaks down into water and oxygen. The bubbling you see is oxygen being released during oxidation, a visible sign the formula is working.

4. Washing Produce, Nuts, Seeds & Grains

This is where most people start, and for good reason. Running water rinses off some surface dust and debris, but it doesn't oxidize residue the way food grade hydrogen peroxide can. The oxidizing action goes to work on the surface of produce, breaking down and loosening what plain water leaves behind, and it may help reduce surface bacteria on produce (hydrogen peroxide has FDA-recognized GRAS status for certain specific, defined food-contact uses). A note on the overnight nut soak. If you're someone who soaks nuts overnight for nutritional reasons (a completely different goal than a quick surface clean), that's a separate practice with its own tradition. Extended soaking in plain water, seven to twenty-four hours, may help reduce phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors naturally present in raw nuts, which some traditional food cultures have practiced for generations to support mineral absorption. The science here is still developing, so consider this food-for-thought rather than a medical claim. Always discard the soaking water and rinse thoroughly before eating.

5. Household Cleaning & Stain Removal

At 3%, food grade hydrogen peroxide is an effective alternative to bleach for surfaces, laundry, and stubborn stains. It oxidizes what it touches, then quietly breaks down into water and oxygen. No harsh fumes, no lingering residue to wipe up later.

Surface cleaning
Spray directly onto countertops, appliances, cutting boards, and other high-touch surfaces. Let it sit for one to two minutes. Rinsing is optional on non-food surfaces, but required on anything that touches food, like cutting boards and counters. One thing to skip: polished or unsealed marble, copper, brass, or other reactive metals, since these can discolor.
Wine and organic stains
Apply full-strength or a 1:1 diluted spray directly to the stain. Blot, don't rub, and let it sit for five to ten minutes. Blot again and rinse with cool water, repeating for stubborn stains. A drop of dish soap gives it extra lift. Quick caution: patch test dark or colored fabrics first, since food grade hydrogen peroxide has mild bleaching action.
Mold and grout
Spray full-strength directly onto affected grout or tile, let sit for ten minutes, scrub, and rinse. For buildup that won't budge, mix two parts baking soda with one part food grade hydrogen peroxide into a paste, apply, let sit for ten minutes, then scrub and rinse. This works well on ceramic, porcelain, and standard tile grout; skip polished marble.
Laundry whitening
Add one cup directly to the washing machine drum or bleach dispenser per load. It's a milder-bleaching alternative to chlorine bleach that brightens whites and helps lift organic stains and odors. Best for whites and light colors; patch test anything colored first.
Surfaces to avoid altogether: polished or unsealed marble, copper, brass, other reactive metals, dark or brightly colored fabrics without a patch test, and delicate painted surfaces.

6. Plant & Garden Use

Hydrogen peroxide occurs naturally in rainwater, just at far lower concentrations than a diluted FGHP solution. Using it in the garden is inspired by that natural process: delivering a little extra oxygen to the root zone and supporting overall plant health.

What it can help with:

Temporarily increases dissolved oxygen in the root zone, supporting stronger root growth and better nutrient uptake
Helps discourage mold, fungal buildup, and anaerobic pathogens in soil, including the type associated with root rot
May help reduce fungus gnat larval activity when applied as a soil drench
Supports seed germination as a pre-soak by softening the seed coat and helping reduce surface pathogens
Breaks down completely into water and oxygen, so there's no soil contamination to worry about
