An Earth Day Message from Our Founder, Kate

An Earth Day Message from Our Founder, Kate

Dear Friends,

Each Earth Day invites us to pause and ask: What does the planet need from us now?

At Essential Oxygen, we’ve always believed the answer begins with conscious choices, from what we put in our mouths to how we treat our neighbors, our communities and the ecosystems we call home.

As a proud B Corp, we believe business should be a force for good, not just for quarterly growth but for the long-term flourishing of people and planet. Every tube of our toothpaste and bottle of our cleaning products reflects our commitment to this mission.

But in 2025, that commitment is deepening.

This year, Essential Oxygen is launching a new phase of our Planet Positive Initiatives: We are turning our focus toward creating a bioregional hub in our hometown of Novato, California. The goal? To spark a model of localized resilience and regeneration that other communities can adapt and make their own.

What is bioregionalism?
It’s the powerful idea that solutions to our greatest environmental and social challenges are best found and implemented close to home. Bioregionalism invites us to see our communities as living interconnected ecosystems with the land, watersheds, wildlife and people all part of a whole. Rather than relying on top-down systems, we ask: “What can we grow, make, reuse, and solve right here where we live?"

As climate disasters increase in frequency and intensity, we need more than emergency kits. We need community. We need to know our neighbors and build trust with them. We need to organize our blocks, our town squares and our backyards to care for each other and the land that holds us.

A compelling example of this kind of grassroots resilience unfolded recently in Topanga Canyon, when the Palisades Fire threatened the region. With fire crews busy tied up elsewhere, it was the community itself that sprang into action. Neighbors turned off propane tanks, patrolled in pickup trucks with water to extinguish spot fires, and checked on their elderly. When the firefighters finally arrived, the community welcomed them and even fed them. Their collective preparedness, communication, and trust saved homes, lives, and habitat.

That’s the kind of resilience we aim to foster in Novato and beyond.

In the coming months, we’ll be hosting local gatherings, resource-sharing circles, and building partnerships to co-create a Bioregional Hub rooted in reciprocity, regeneration, and community wisdom.

This Earth Day, we invite you to join us in thinking and acting bioregionally. Whether you're in Novato or anywhere else on the planet, your local relationships matter. Your ecosystem matters. You matter.

With love and fierce hope for our future,
Kate Linforth
